all power kills when i turn the key
all power kills when i turn the key
yesterday, i tried to start the car, it craked a little bit, there was a "thump" and everything turned off. no power to anything comming off the main battery cable. i fiddled around with the wires around the starter to day an went out for a little bit. when i came back, the interieor lights were back on. i tried to start the car. everything went dead again. i know this has been posted before but i dont know much about the wiring. could someone please discribe all of the wires down by the starter so i can figure out where it all needs to be? anybody know EXACTLY what is wrong?
Ha. If I could know EXACTLY what was wrong with a car without laying a hand on it...I'd be a very rich man.
Anyway, look at the recent post by "blk88iroc." After shorting out his battery cables by accident, he now has pretty much the same problem as you.
Somewhere, one of your battery cables is loose.
The first thing to do is get a 5/16" wrench and make sure the battery terminals are tight. Side-mount batteries are always coming loose for some reason.
If that doesn't do the trick, trace each battery wire to where it goes, wiggling it as you go. (If you keep the headlights on while you do this, you can see when the lights get bright all of a sudden.)
Even if you think the battery is perfect, always try hooking up another car with jumper cables too.

well i figured if out before i ever saw this post...
thanks anyways.
it was the wires going to and from the starter. they were coroded, and the acessory wire's crimps were going bad. i cut the bad suff off and replaced the wires. the positive cable i brushed with baking soda water to clean off some of the corrosion. when it was all back together, it ran fine.
