-={ Stalls out... alt problem ¿ }=-
I just got an 87 IROC and it ran fine for about 5 days then it started giving me problems. When I put it in gear out of park (reverse or drive) or pull up to a stop the voltage drops way down and it will either stall and die or the engine will rumble a little and it seems to "kick into gear" and everything will be fine. Also if it is idling either in park and any of the electrical components are played with (lights, windows, etc.) The voltage drop really low and it will do the same thing as above. My best educated guess (which isn't very educated) is an alternator problem. If anyone can suggest anything on it that would be great. Thanks.

Putting a load on the system - lights, windows, etc., is naturally going to draw down some power. When you are driving it, do you have a steady voltage, like 13/14 volts? And when you pull up to a light, does it dip down a bit? You might want to check the timing, and maybe it needs a good tune-up (I don't know it's history) I'm just suggesting this because at one time I had a very similar problem. My car would act all retarded at a light, sometimes even stall, and sometimes even stall out just dropping it into gear... hopefully that helps...

Thanks thunderstick. Your reply is definetly heading me in the right direction. It sounds like you had the same problem as me. It's gotten worse so I'm not going to drive it until I can fix it. If I run into anymore snags I'll post them. Thanks.

Hey man...got a suggestion for ya.
It sounds to me like your alternator isn't doing it's job anymore. You can have it checked at a parts store, or you can check yourself. To do that, turn your car on and disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Be careful that you don't touch any metal parts with your tools. (It could be painful
) If the car dies, it means that it's running off the battery only. The alternator is not charging anymore. If that's the case, you need to replace it. If you do have to replace it, make sure the battery is still good and fully charged. Just a suggestion...That was the solution to my problem...I hope this helps...if not...hope ya get it fixed...
Later...

Sounds like your distrib walked. Is the car sometimes really hard to start? If so, retard the timing and you're idle should be good in both gear and park. How low is the volts dropping?
