I am looking at a project & am wanting to know if any of you guys are really knowledegable about the Mass Air Flow Sensor, how it works, I am looking at doing some modding to the housing it sits in & want to know the effects of this.
Please get ahold of me

yeah their are alot people on the board that have maf cars, and they are very fast and know what they are doing.

i would just run searches on the board and take a look at certain cold air intakes, and mods for the maf (like cutting the screens out).

The MAF sensor in a TG is what is referred to as a hot wire type. How it works is this, it heats up the fine wire inside the air tunnel to a pre determined temperature. As air is drawn through the air tunnel it tries to cool the wire and the amount of current required to maintain wire temp is converted by the ECM to a fuel delivery map. It basically controls injector pulse width hence fuel at the correct ratio. It is a delicate and very expensive device so whatever you do try not to subject it to any type of mechanical shock. Do not remove the protective screen as you see people do. Damage the wire and it's done. MAF is controlled by two relays, a power relay and a relay for what they refer to as burnoff. The burnoff relay will turn on for a short time and superheat the wire to keep it clean. They are the most effective ways of properly controlling air/fuel ratios in modern cars. Chevy switched to a speed density system for a while but they came back to MAF for the LS1, LS6 engines. The temporary change was due to cost considerations as speed density is a much cheaper method. It is an integrated unit so there is not much you can really do to improve it. It works in conjunction with the TPS and O2 sensors to maintain as close to a 14.7/1 f/a ratio. There is another type, a mechanical vane type but I don't believe it shows up on any GM vehicles.
