timing timing timing!!!

My 89 305 tbi will not time right. When I disconnect the tan bypass wire and set it to 6-8 deg. BTDC it runs pretty smooth , but when I hook the wire back up it backfires and barely runs. Do you think the distributer is worn out. fuel system seems to be working well.. anybody seen this before?

well are you reconnecting it while it is running?.. I know it sounds stupid but people have done it.

is it possible that a bad knock sensor is telling the ESC to retard the timing so far that the engine hardly runs?

found the problem. It was a bad pick up coil.
