instrument lamps work, now they blow fuses!!??

well i posted something last week about my gauge lights not working. I replaced the remote dimmer and they worked....for a day. Then they quit. So i replaced the dimmer wheel itself. It worked......for 10 minues. Now it blows fuses like there's no tomorrow. I can run the lights but by the time i get to my buddies house, the fuse is toast. Whats next? I miss my lights. Thanx

INST LMPS. Its the one that gives power to all the lights. Needless to say, its boring driving at night without my speedometer. I like to know how fast i was going so i can get smart with the cops.

that short to ground is likely what caused the previous remote dimmer to fail.

if you've got an aftermarket radio installed, try pulling the radio out of the dash and cutting the grey wire before it enters the adapter harness. tape up both ends so they do not short out.

if radio turns out not to be the source of your problem, there are around a dozen different bulbs and other devices fed by the grey wire that can cause the inst lps fuse to blow. could also be something wrong with the wiring harness itself too.

is not an uncommon occurence for an aftermarket radio install to cause problems like you describe.

try disconnecting the grey wire that comes out of your firebirds radio harness and seeing if the fuse stops blowing.

forgot to mention that with the grey wire disconnected, the radio will still work fine.

display will stay full brightness during the nighttime though and will not dim with the rest of the dashlights when the headlights are turned on.
