Fuel Gauge???

I just bought an 88 Trans Am and my fuel gauge keeps dipping down for full to empty when I fill it up. It does till I reach about 200 miles and then it will stay at 1/4 of a tank and go down normally. I think it is the float in the gas tank but wanted to know if anyone else had this problem and could it be electrical?

Thanks

Just guess. I've asked this question before, and found that a lot of Pontiacs do this. There are better things to do with $100 or more than a fuel guage or sending unit.
