cooling fan doing wierd things
cooling fan doing wierd things
Hi I have a 92 camaro which I just put a 383 stroker down in it. I'm not sure the engine being put in has anything to do with this but here goes. My electric cooling fan does not come on unless I have the AC turned on. If I turn the AC off the fan goes off. Now, the AC doesn't work(I think its a bad compressor but maybe not) but the AC blower fan works fine. I'm starting to think that there might be a short somewhere effecting the AC compressor not turning and the electric cooling fan only coming on when the AC is turned on. Also my back hatch, which is electric, keeps blowing the fuse but I cant tell if its blowing the fuse but I dont think its blowing the fuse every time its opened and closed its within like a 8 hour period of time or something and it might be related to the cooling fan and AC problem. Now I can turn the AC compressor with my hand and it turns pretty freely. I just dont think its recieving the signal to turn on. I have checked all the fuses but dont know what to do next. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Danny
the cooling fan(s) have two modes of operation, 1. the fan switch located on the passenger side head between #6 and #8 spark plugs should turn the fan on at about 225* and off at about 190*. make sure you hooked the switch back up after the engine swap. 2. the fan comes on and runs continually as long as the air conditioner system is energized, sounds like that part is working right.
as far as the compressor goes, there are a couple of reasons the compressor clutch may not energize. 1. the wire going to the clutch never got hooked back up after the swap, or, 2. the safety pressure switch mounted on the accumulator is not seeing enough pressure in the A/C system and wont let the compressor engage, check this by temporarily jumping the switch with a wire (between the two wires) if the compressor starts you don't have enough freon in the system to make the pressure switch engage.
all this is assuming that all the fuses and fusible links are OK.

The stock fan switch turns on at 238º and will not turn off at 190º for the simple fact the factory thermosat is 195º. The ECM controlled fan (TPI generally) will however kick on at roughly 220-225º and off at 205-210º.
