The ECM can go, but the EGR, two exhaust air injection solenoids, and TCC lockup (auto trans only) will not function without the ECM. Also, you would need to power the fuel pump while cranking. If you have an '89, as your name indicates, the speedo will continue to function without the ECM, as it's cable driven.
hey fella, i just did the exact same thing with my 305 tbi.. i converted to a edelbrock 600cfm carb. I left my ecm in actually.. the fuel pump would not run with the ecm in it. All my gauges ran fine. Also we had to run a different distributor, one with a coil pack on top of the cap. We got this at a junkyard. my friend had to wire it up different.. but as far as everything it wasnt that hard. What year is your car? If you havent started remember if you have the 87 and up heads with the centerbolts you will not find an intake for a carb that will match up to it.. as far as i have found.. I had to go buy an aftermarket, I bought an edelbrock performer and it was 151 plus tax thru jegs. If you have any more questions let me know..
