A/C Dead! HELP!
A/C Dead! HELP!
OK, I need to get my A/C working again. It was working wonderfully until... One day I noticed that one of my cooling fans were not working. So I figured I would start checking the relays. The only problem was that I didn't know which relay it was. I have 4 relays (that I could find) under the hood. One on the passenger side and three on the driver's side firewall. I noticed that all of the relays are the same (I thought they were! Are they?) so I went and bought 1 relay and started swapping out the relays one by one until the fan started working again. Nothing. Anyway, one day I am driving down the street and the car almost dies on me. I shrugged it off and kept going. Then it does it again. And I start to smell smoke. Well I had to get to work, so I had to bear the smell until I got there. After getting home I found the source of the smoke. The AC controls. It seemed to be coming from the fan speed switch. So my question is... Is my switch dead? It ran for a little while when smoking. Are all the relays under the hood the same? Should I just go and replace all of them? Please help! Its hot.

The one on the passenger side (near the firewall) is the high blower relay. When the a/c is on max this relay turns the fan (hvac) blower on high.
The three on the drivers side firewall are;
1. Fuel Pump relay
2. Primary cooling fan relay
3. Secondary cooling fan relay
Sounds to me like the relay on the passenger side (high blower) is toast and may have taken your fan switch with it. It does sound like the fan (hvac) switch is shot. I would replace this and the high blower relay.
