RPM gauge

Hey guys. Ive got a problem and am having a tough time with fixing it or getting info. I drive a 1991 Z28 355cid auto. I am having trouble with the RPM gauge which started on Friday. Sometimes the gauge will sit at 0 even when Im driving. Other times it bounces around like a mad man even when Im cruising at a constant speed. The car runs great/no drivability problems but that gauge does the spiking thing. Sometimes it runs normal. It did it today so I stop the car and put her in park--> gauge slams to 0 I push all the wires near the coil/distributor and the gauge starts bouncing then normal and then bouncing. My ignition set up is MSD distributor/MSD coil/MSD 6AL and Taylor wires. Any ideas?????

Sounds like your tachometer (not RPM gauge) is on it's way to the scrap yard.

There's a little motor in there that you need to replace. You can get it from any parts store or even a scrap yard.

How hard is that to change? I have had the cluster out before but I thought that it was a sealed unit with just the 2 electricall plugs.

whats wierd is that my tach i had a problem with for like 3 weeks straight, a couple months back, and it would do things like be stuck at about 1500 or so after start up and stay there for anywhere from a couple minutes, to the entire time engne was running, when it did it.

it hasnt done it for a couple months now and seems fine now,

wierd..

good luck
