Brake Lights - URGENT
Brake Lights - URGENT
Someone told me my brake lights were out so I came on here and searched through the old messages. Tried fix number one - the fuse was blown so I replaced it. Now the new fuse has blown. I read some more articles and have narrowed it down to being the brake switch or a faulty ground. I have no idea how to fix either of them, so any help would be appreciated. The brake lights and hazzards are both out and I believe they use the same wires. What does a faulty ground look like and what is involved if it's the switch? Thanks in advance.

The brake switch is really cheap and easy...bout 7 bucks at autozone. Look under the dash at the brake pedal arm...the switch is mounted right in front of the arm...made of plastic with 1 (w/o cruise control) or 2 (with cruise) electrical connectors on it. Test it by manually pressing the button all the way in and looking for brake lights. You could also jump the connection on the wires to bypass the switch. It requires no tools to remove...just pull it forward and disconnect the wires. To install the new one...push the pedal to the floor...insert the new switch (you will hear a clicking sound)...plug the wires back in...release the pedal and pull it back (brakes off position) manually to adjust it. Thats it...easy huh? As for a bad ground...look for loose or corroded (green/grey) connections where wires connect to chassis/frame. Hope this helps...I just bought an 87 IROC that I had to replace the brake switch on before I could drive it home. (switch was actually broken in half)
