Top Problems Help!
My 91' vert has a new problem, the hatch that covers the top when it is down won't close. The solenoids just keep on popping, it doesn't even stop when the car is in gear ( the is safety lock that is supposed to keep this from happening ). It gets worse, as soon as I popped the swith out of the console ( wiring still attached )the problem magically disappeared. I am now too scared to drive with the top down ( for fear of having that hatch become an airbrake!! ), has anyone had this problem, any ideas on how to fix it?
Ok here is an update, maybe this info makes this question easier to answer. The switch in the console is fine, I don't know about the other switch ( but the dealership says this safety switch is discountinued ), I can't even find this one. How was this system routed, I'm guessing some of the cars orignal pre-conversion hardtop release hardware was used for the convertible stuff.

Sounds like a wire to me.
And the culprit might be in the console. You say it stopped popping when you removed the switch from the console. Perhaps a wire is touching metal somewhere in the console.
As for the safety switch.
I've never heard of that one either, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.
But even so I don't think the safety switch would be the problem.
The safety switch is designed to cancel out the switch in the console so therefore it would not activate the console switch.
I found out that you can't pop the tanau top with the trunk open so there's something tied into the trunk as well.
You might also want to remove the side panels and see how things look back there.
This is really far fetched, but ya never know....
When you fold down the rear seats...
Look for a black cable with a loop at one end. This is the cable release for the tanau. THere's one on each side. Kinda like a manual overide. Maybe one of the cables are pulling on the release and is freaking out the release thingy.

Thanks, the problem hasn't happened lately so I think the problems is a wire in the console, as for the safety switch, I think the one the dealership told me about is for the trunk. If you take off the panel in the trunk, it looks like the tonneau release is rigged from the cars rear hatch ( before ASC ) release. As I look around the car more and more of ASC's work looks like a hack-job.

Hack job is right!!!
When I installed new speakers in the rear I had both side panels off at the same time.
I sat in the back seat for a moment taking a break and looked at the workmanship.
What a friggen nightmare!
On our car the left and right sides look nothing alike at all. I don't even dare take a tape measure back there to see just how off they are in measurements.
I'm really gonna dread the day I have to go shopping for a new top.
Our top has about another year left on it before it will be a gonner.
Still doesn't leak though and it's the original top. So I guess that's a plus.
Let me know what you find out about the problem you are having. I'd like to know for future reference.
