You need to test the basic elements. You said you have an 87, so it should be a remote coil HEI system, correct? First, test the ignition module. Any glorified K-mart of an autoparts store (pepboys, autozone) should be able to test this for free. You will need to pull the dist cap, and disconnect the two wiring connectors on the outside of the distributor body. Then, there are two bolts(I think they are 6.5mm, might be wrong) holding it down. Finally, disconnect the connector on back(pick up coil) and have them test it. When they test it, if you go in autozone, try and get a white shirt to do it. Nothing against red shirts, but management tends to know more about their own equipment. Also, make sure he repeats the test at least THREE times back to back. Modules tend to fail when heat is applied, so unless it fails on the first try, you NEED to try and simulate real driving(cycling). If this yields a faulty module, congrats, you solved it. You may as well buy a new cap and rotor if you havent already done so. If the module tests ok, then it may be time to look at the pickup coil. Email if #1 doesnt work.
