Anyone tried replacing dash lighting with LED's?
Anyone tried replacing dash lighting with LED's?
Thinking about trying it, but wondered if anyone else has, and the problems they had.
Thanks,
Mike

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Interesting idea. There are a good range of colors available now (red, green, orange, yellow, blue, white; and violet ones released recently).
The only problems I can think of would be: 1) finding ones that are bright enough to use - I've seen some listed at 30,000 mCd; and 2) how much of an effect the 'dimmer' control will have on them. Depending on the resistance range of the dimmer control (in conjunction to using a 1k ohm resistor to drop the current down to a 'safe' level), they may be an on-off type deal, or it could have little effect on the brightness.
A possible solution for #1 would be to aim them directly at the gauge face.
Might be something to try on a rainy day....

I like the idea. I'll take a loot at it but I think it might be a little $$ for a rainy day unless you have a good source for LEDs.
As for the dimmer working...I just replaced my dimmer switch and the darn thing is still an on/off dimmer. If I'm lucky I get an imbetween. Oh well, the LEDs brightness could be controlled with a nice potentimeter if you go all out on this project.
