Starter Problem

Here's the deal. I wanted to make a remote solenoid mount for my starter so I could cure my hot start problem. Instead of buying a kit I just bought a new solenoid/relay and some wire and followed the tech article. Now I'm pretty sure that I have the new relay wired up correctly, but I don't think that the starter is wired up right. My starter (its not the original) has 4 ternimals. One large one where the battery wire and power wires were, a small one where the purple start wire was, another small one that connects to the starter, and one last small one that had nothing going to it.
So now the only wire I should have going there is the large battery wire, right? And I need a jumper wire too, right?
The way I have it wired up now is with the battery wire going to the large terminal and a jumper across to the starter wire.
This does not work because the starter doesn't engae the flywheel, it only spins. The only way I can get my car to start is if I run another wire to the the start terminal on the solenoid and connect that to power before I turn the key. This engages the starter, then the turning the key turns the starter.
thanks for your help.
Chris
