On a wiring diagam,, I can't find anywhere it would plug into.
The wires either go into a neutral safety switch (where you mentioned on the shifter) or a clutch switch.
The purple wire comes in from the starter, routes thru the switch (either) and goes out as the yellow wire to the ignition switch.
Do you crank the car having the switch in the end of the plug & flipping it or do you flip the switch & then start the car the normal way ?

What color is the connector ? On my bird (5 speed) the connector(blue) goes to the clutch switch then into the harness.
If I have time, I'll check my camaro(auto) later today

The yellow wire goes from the ignition switch to the p/n switch. The purple wire goes from the p/n switch to the starter. The only connector under the dash should be connected to the ignition switch. The ignition switch itself is located at the base of the steering column, not where the ignition lock cylinder is. There is linkage that runs from the lock cylinder to the switch.
If you are getting lights, accessories, etc. with the ignition switch in the run position, but you are not getting power on the yellow wire when the switch is turned to start, your ignition switch is probably bad or there is possibly a mechanical problem with the lock cylinder/linkage.
