Cruise Control - incorrect functioning

Hey guys.
I had my tumbler fixed a while ago and ever since the cruise control doen't work properly.
Sliding the lever to R/A to "set" the speed doesn't work anymore. Now I have to press and hold the button on the end.
Also moving the lever to R/A to "Resume" or "Accelerate" doesn't work any more.

What is wrong? What do I look for?
Any help is welcome (novice).

Thankx

Sliding the switch to R/A shouldn't set the speed anyways,, that's what the button is there for. If you turn the cruise on & push it to R/A to set the cruise, there is no previous set speed for it to resume too.

(I'm sure you know this but,,) For your car to resume it's cruise you have to have set the cruise before you came to the stop you're wanting to resume to.

Since the car does set cruise (I assume from what your said), if you press the switch over to the R/A does it pick up any speed (while you are at a set cruise)?

Hey deadbird

When the cruise is set/on and then I hit the brakes to slow down, sliding the lever over to R/A does nothing (or if I just slide it over while "cruise"ing)

I could have swore that before I could set the cruise by sliding the lever.....maybe my memory is going.

I've got the same problem on my wifes car. It is the R/A part of the switch that is bad. These don't use plain open or closed contacts; they use resistance. The whole turn signal lever must be replaced, but it is very simple. Just unplug the cable from the CC switch to column then pull straight out on the lever.

BTW, your memory is correct. Pushing the switch to R/A will set the cruise. It took me a while to figure out why when I sometimes hit the blinkers that the car would suddenly go into cruise (which can be alarming as you are normally decelerating before making a turn). I knew I wasn't pressing the set button on the end.

Go to deadbirds collision parts page/steering column (http://www.deadbird.org/diags/partmenu.htm) and look up the 'combo switch' for your particular car. Then go to http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ and search for your part number. The switch for mine ('87 w/cruise&pulse) was only $10!

Deadbird, thanks for the great page! I can't believe the number of parts that are available, for instance a new Z28 hood for $400. Unfortunately they don't have some of the parts I looked up.
