Just curious has you alternator been putting out more voltage than normal cause it sounds like we got a similar problem. I went to start my car the other night. Turn the key, click. Turn, click. Turn, click. Turn, click. Turn, zoom it starts. And the gauge says my alterntor is putting out like 16 volts.

This is on a 86 IROC 305 TPI.

Did you replace the solinoid when you replaced the starter?
Also check the fuseable links down by the starter, they look like a big black pill.

no i didnt check the silinoid but heres what i have done so far,
i know its not to do with that whole VATS system now because i work at chevy and they let me borrow the overide box for the whole VATS system and it hasn't done a thing. but i have been thinking it seems like a silinoid all along. it seems like it not alowing enough power to turn the starter and a silinoid would do the trick right?
thanks aaron

I had the same problem with mine. I tried everything from the fuel pump, vats, neutral safety switch to the wires, I gave up trying everything so I just sent the car to a mechanic and he noticed that when he jumped the starter the car went into reverse! Turns out that the shifter cables were out of place I think? I'll find out tomorrow

i replaced my ignition switch again, had my starter tested, and now i know that there is no power even going to the damn starter. i have no clue on how to fix the problem and i have been working on the car all day now. i would take it to a mechanic but being as low on cash as i am, i cant afford it.

please anyone how do you fix this problem????????

Try replacing the starter solenoid. It's probably about $10. If the solenoid goes bad no power will get to your starter.

I am not exactly sure where to find it on your car but I am sure someone here can help you with that.

well the starter is brand new and i also know the starter is in perfect working order because we tested it and works just as it should. i also took a pick with a light in the handle and a ground cord and tested the positive, power is there. then tested the purple cable that is supposed to accivate the silinoid and no power came from that when i had someone act like they were starting the car..

i dont know what cable it is on the ignition switch itself to test that wire to narrow the problem.

O, if the starter and solinoid are in working order, and you know that there is no power going to the solinoid you'll have to get the meter and start back tracking that wire. As a jumping off point you may want to find the wire that supplies power to the ignition switch for starting and see if there is power on it. If no power check all fuses and replace any that could possibly be bad, and start back tracking the wire that is supposed to carry power to the ignition switch.

Good luck, it is going to be a long process if it is a broken wire somewhere.
