Can't get an alternator to work
My race car had an older heavy 10SI type alternator. Simple 3 wire setup. Main post is hot to the battery. Red wire on the 2 wire plug goes to the hot post. Brown wire goes to ignition side for field.
I'm trying to install a newer smaller style alternater. Main post is still hot but I now have a 3 wire plug. Red wire, easy guess, goes to hot post. The 2 other wires are brown and brown with a white stripe. I'm guessing these are the field wires but every combination I've tried in hooking them up, won't let the alternator start charging.
This is one of those alternators that you can't pull apart and rebuild. I'm taking it in to the parts store tomorrow to get it tested to see if it actually works. If not then I give it back to the junk yard. It was off a 89 Cavalier.
