What exactly does a MSD Tach Adapter do, and how?

It's curiosity mainly. How does it work to stop the tach problems assocated with installing an MSD 6AL?
Don't suppose you can do it with Radio shack parts...

I think it's kind of strange how some of our cars have a tach problem while others do not. I did not. However, I was told by Tim Burgess that this problem can be resolved by not connecting the MSD white wire to the factory tach input, but by running the factory tach off the MSD tach output.
Specifically, MSD's instructions call for their white wire to be connected to two GM wires:
1) White wire on the gray connector &
2) Black wire on the black connector.
Instead, wire MSD's white wire only to the black wire on the black connector. Connect the white wire on the gray connector directly to the tach output on the MSD.

Hey that's a very question, considering I need one and I'm broke (right now anyway...). It looks to me like it' just a big coil and a diode. I wonder how many mH (mili henry's) this coil is ? Or ... Henry's.. damn that would be a lot of inductance. Do you guys figure this coil is used to dampen the current spikes that would make the tach jump.. ? Maybe someone can take one apart and measure it :P
