Cooling Fan - Sorry!
Cooling Fan - Sorry!
87 Camaro LG4 (VIN 'H'), now a 383 with computer and harness removed and A/C removed. I realize this subject has been worked over excessively. The past few months I've done a lot of searches and feel that I have at least some understanding but can't get it to work automatically. This is important to me as I don't want to see it over heat again.
The Fan does work with the Toggle that I mounted on the dash. Toggled between the Red wire at the relay and the Blk/Red St at the relay, going to the Fan.
New items are the Relay, Cooling Fan Switch in the head (#6 & 8) and the CFS cap.
The Relay plug is wired as follows:
A. Black/Red St. -- Goes to the Fan.
B. Green -- To CFS.
C. Brn/Wht St -- To Bulkhesd connector (G7).
D. Not Used, plugged.
E. Red -- From Fuseable link at the battery, Hot at all times.
I have a Voltimeter and have checked for continuity at the wires and connections. I've tried grounding the Green wire at the Cap and also directly from the Relay. Just haven't been able to get that Relay to pop yet. (Maybe both the old the new Relays are shot)?
Everthing seems to be wired correctly, unless there is an issue beyond the Bulkhead connecter. If there is anything bothering me it's the Brn/Wht St. wire that I have going to G7. I also question if I even need it, with no cc controls?
I've been at this problem a number of different times and just can't seem to get it to come on automatically.
I give up and would certainly appreciate your comments. My appologies for bringing this subject to the board again.

Have you checked for +12v on the tan/white wire with the ignition on (should be a switched +12v source)? Somewhere along the line, that wire could've been cut or lost power.
Is the cooling fan switch a new stock of one like a JET (cooler on/off temp)? If it's a stock, they don't ground until a really high engine temp.
Also, if you have replaced the actual gauge sensor, it could be reading incorrect. They read much higher than an OEM sensor. May think it's not comming on at the right temp because you aren't seeing the right temp at the gauge. The fan switch however ,'sees' a quite different temp.
I'd start with making sure the relay is wired correctly & that tan/white wire is right.
here's a diagram in case you haven't seen enough of them
(replace ECM controlled ground with fan switch)

Deadbird, I wish upon you new life.
The Key was that Brn/Wht St wire, 12+V with key on. I found such a wire and spliced into it and then grounded the Green wire that goes to the CFS cap and BINGO fan runs with key on. I was spliced into a Brn/Wht wire but it didn't have the V.
I guess that I had the misconception that, if Hot enough, the fan should run even with the key in the off position.
Now that that major hurdle is out of the way I should add that 20A fuse and will take a serious look at either the 86-87 GN switch or the Jet switch that you mentioned. I've read about both switches and am also concerned about the hi-temp of the standard switch.
You made this old man's day, thanks for bearing with me.
