I have an 88 GTA with the digital dash. When I got the car a few weeks ago, the oil pressure gauge was not working. I found out today the wire was not connected to the main plug. I connected them together, however the pressure reads 0 unless the engine is reved, then the gauge reads about 30. What could be wrong??

Disconnect the wire from the oil pressure sender & turn the ignition on. The oil pressure gauge should read full scale. Ground the wire that used to be connected to the oil pressure sender. The oil pressure gauge should read zero. If the gauge does not read as indicated above then either the gauge is defective or the wire between the engine compartment and the cluster has an intermittant short to ground. If the gauge does function as indicated above then the oil pressure sender is defective. The sender should have a resistance of zero ohms @ 0 psig, and 90 ohms @ full scale (60 psig for V8 & 80 psig for V6).

Now I have a 87 GTA with the digital dash and when the key is on but engine is off the oil pressure guage is blank, although it does the self test normally, when I start it up I see it go up to 60 PSI and sometimes when I rev it up it goes higher, going off the scale and going blank but when I let off the gas it reappears from the top. If yours is like mine then it won;t display 0 it will be blank. But I did have a engine fire and mine could be totaly screwed up, meaning being different that yours.
