goes down, but doesn't come back up

i recently put in a new headlight motor. It WORKS when i tested it at the salvage yard. it spins clockwise, and it spins counter clock wise. i put the headlight motor in, and attached it. The headlight motor went down. Now, both my headlights are down. When i turn my headlights on ...... the side with thew new motor won't go up. I think it has to do something with one of the wires not working, but which wire is it? any thoughts?

Well, you didn't mention what year Firebird this was on. I make a repair kit for the 1987-92 headlights. These headlight units have a large nylon gear with 3 solid gel pucks that transmit the force from the gear to an inner 3-lobe hub. With time the gel breaks down to roughly a spoonful of crumbs. The nylon gear will then just freewheel and not turn that hub to raise or lower the headlights. I sell two versions of the kit. TDS p/n 207280 consists of 3 close-tolerance precision machined Delrin bushings, 8-32 zinc plated screws and nuts (the ones that mount the motor housing often snap off when you try to repair it) and detailed instructions. TDS p/n 208280 also includes the side cover and motor housing gaskets. If you want one of these kits, e-mail me at: topdownsolutions@yahoo.com.

The 1982-86 headlight units have two smaller gears. If this is the type you have, you can get new bronze machined gears from Ecklers or Corvette Central. You can also swap your unit for a rebuilt one at this web site: http://www.freewebz.com/fiero-headlights/

Good luck,
Lon

86' birds have three seperate relays that control the headlight motors. some people have upgraded their 82'-86' birds to the more reliable 87'-92' style control system, but is probably easier to just replace the faulty relay on your current system.

wiring diagrams and some misc other headlight motor information are avaliable in this thread:

It is possible that you wired it wrong and the polarity is reversed, in which you turn the headlights on and the one with the new motor will stay down, but when you turn the lights off, that headlight will pop up while the other one will drop down like its supposed to do.

Try switching the wires around, if you hard-wired it.
