elec. hatch latch broke!

My hatch pull down is stuck in the up position. What are my options? I know when this happenned to my granddad's car he had his mechanic leave it in the down position so it could be opened and closed like a regular trunk (without electric pull-down). Is there any way I could do this? I am at college so I have no junkyard access right now. I am really looking for somekind of temporary fix like that. How can I manually move it so the hatch will 'close'? thanks guys

There is a small switch just to the left where the loop on the hatch latches. Pressing it should power the motor down. If the unit is still getting power. Is the hatch light working?

i have a 91. The hatch the 3rd brake is connected by a coiled cord that goes nder the headliner. It doesn't use contacts. I will have to go try that switch later today. I live in a dorm, so my car is parked far away. Thanks

well, i took a look at it. The fuse is fine. Also, i pressed the switch, at least i think i did (i pressed anything pressable). That did not do it also. I noticed on a lot of hatch posts, they can hear the motor trying to work.....I cannot. there is no sound, no signs of power, but like i said, the fuse is fine, and i don't have access to a voltometer or any of that stuff here. should i assume a bad motor? or maybe is it just part of the motor that i will need to take apart when i get a chance? how can i tell? how much can i expect this to cost? please help, guys, i am getting frustrated with the bird! thanks
