Code 33

I know there've been a billion posts on the Code 33 issue... but I'm wondering if anyone's heard of this....
Here's the situation: 87 Z28, if you look under the air filters, you see some kind of baffles or something, looks as if it's supposed to direct or restrict air flow. I had the idea that removing these baffles may help the air flow a little. 10 minutes and a sawzall later, baffles are gone. Re-install the air filters and air ducting and such, and I get a SES light within 5 seconds of cranking the car, stays on the entire time it runs. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

What you have done is gutting the MAF. I would not recommend doing it, but since you already have done it......

See if the three wires inside the MAF is OK, if nor buy a new one.....

If they are OK, disconnect the battery for 5 min and then try again.......

If this not helps, check the TPS voltage, should be set at ,54 v at idle, increase it to 0,57 v and se if that helps.....

Good luck.....

Use the search button on Gutted maf and code.....you will find alot info..

/n.

No, I didn't take the screens out of the MAF. I took the baffles out that are before the air filter.

You could of just unscrewed the baffles to remove them instead of sawing them out.

Top baffles, yes; bottom baffles, no.

Those baffles sound like the ones which move when the engine is cold. They allow the air filter to draw air from the shrouds around the exhause manifold.

They are opperated by a vacuum hose. So if you took out the vacuum servo, you are likely letting the hose suck air.

The vacuum goes to a little thermostatically opperated valve. If you didn't block off the vacuum hose you have a new direct leak and will get the code 33.

The baffles should not restrict the air much in normal opperation, but if they stuck down they would be a problem.
