140 MPH Speedo not working in my 87 Formula
140 MPH Speedo not working in my 87 Formula
IS this some kind of electrical/wiring problem? I bought the car without the speedo working and want to fix it asap. I have been told by alot of people that the Speedo's themselves are rarily the problem and tha it is usually a wire. Any ideas on where to look first?

Pull the cluster out and check for corrosion on the contacts and for loose wiring... it is probably a wiring problem before the cluster. If you're adept with electrical/mechanical devices, you might want to tear down the cluster and check for broken gears and missing electrical connections. The problem is really too vague for a better answer than that.
Edit: You should purchase a Haynes repair manual before undertaking the removal of the dash assy. b/c there are some screws and bolts in less than intuitive locations that you will need to take off.

I have a Chilton's and i'm very mechanical, so it shouldn't be a prob, just need to know where to look first. The info I got from the original owner is that it died during a fairly spirited highway run. Thats all I really know about the problem and I just got thecar yesterday, so i haven't had a chance to mess around to much. I already have the entire interior stripped out of the car, minus the guage cluster, so I don't mind pulling it and doing an inspection. Any other problem areas i hould check out?

The speedo is driven by a little electrical motor (it is not cable driven which you probably alredy knew), after nearly 15 years of service, it may have retired. I'd guess a bad VSS if you were getting a code.
