"Another Battery Gauge Question!"

The other morning i went to start my car, it turned over and then it died, it acted like my battery went dead. Ok no problem. Well i waited untill the next morning to mess with it, I hooked some cables up to jump it and when i tried to start it a spark came from my positive side of my battery? After that i got it running and shut it off and then tried to start it again and nothing? I put a new postive cable on and now it starts fine? The thing is the battery gauge now reads real low and this has never happened before, i'm just wondering if i might have fried something?

If the system voltage is not above 13 volts with the engine running, then there is a problem with the charging system, which may mean a defective alternator.
