If the needle goes up when you increase engine RPM then most likely the battery is weak and putting a drain on the alternator at slower speeds. Also the alternator maybe weak and not putting out enough juice at idle RPM. Last, terminal connections and bad grounds at lights, etc may pull down the whole system at idle. Systematically check each. Good Luck!!

I would go to a local alternator rebuild shop and explain your needs to them. They can beef up your original alternator or sell you a nice rebuilt one. The fast-food auto shops (autozone, pep boys) are selling you the same rebuilt (in Mexico or some place)alternator. The difference is the quality of workmanship and personal attention you'll get from a local shop. With a local shop you can have them rebuild it with chrome parts or do custom painting to the housing while disassembled. You may even save some money, but don't weigh that too heavy. Plan on paying for what you get. Good Luck!

You can buy an alternator repair kit for $20. Comes with a new alternator bearing, regulator, diode trio, brushes and instructions.
Takes about 20 minutes to repair.
Its nessessary to remove the pulley to change the bearing.
Use an impact wrench to loosen the pulley nut.

Many auto parts stores will test your alternator for free.
While you're at the store, put your battery on a battery charger.
If you start your car with the new/repaired alternator with a dead battery, it can kill the alternator. Alternators do not charge batteries, but they will maintain the charge.
