sounds like the gears inside the motor could be stripped. do they go the rest of the way up when you turn them manually?

You may be able to find your answer here

Mine (both) have just recently started doing this as well and is on my 'round-to' list. It seems to be a fairly startightforward fix based on other posts.

The cause of this and the solution differs for a 1982-86 and a 1987-92 Firebird. The link (search) that Deadbird supplied will provide the solution for both versions. Just realize that for the early units (1982-86) you have limit switches and two small nylon gears that can be a problem. For the later units (1987-92) the problem is most likely the 3 gel inserts inside large nylon gear.

I make a repair kit for these 1987-92 units. E-mail me at: topdownsolutions@yahoo.com if you need one.
