Idea regarding Power Window motor... Can this be done?
Hello,
Well, it's finally happened to me... My window has stopped working. Classic case of the thermal protection kicking in. I have read "Power Windows 101" and searched past threads on the subject. One thing that is clear is that the job is a pain. I was think about going the rebuild/replace brushes, etc... then if that didn't work, replace the motor. In Vader's PDF, he explains how to remove the plastic cap on the motor and clean the parts. Sounds like a good idea, but may not solve the problem. How about buying a new motor assembly and using the plastic cap/brush assembly from the new one to replace the old plastic cap/brush assembly? In the Vader's PDF, the pictures show the armature in place at all time, can the armature be removed? As easy as pulling/sliding it out? If so, you could use the new armature as well. This will efectively give you a new motor. I know the gear assembly won't be new, but I would venture to guess that any problems with the windows would not be from mechanical failure. Clean and regrease the guides, and test.... If this works, you can bypass any drilling, removing of pop rivets, and all that other junk. Worse case... it doesn't work and you have to replace the assembly, which you already have... Please let me know if you think this is possible or not...
Thanks.
John

just went through this over the weekend, in fact I have a post about parts. Yep, you can do! The delco motors have not changed in the last 15-20 years. Daughters 99 cavalier driver side window stopped working. Called Peps, said dealer item only. Thier cross-reference is just not up to date. My buddy was over to visit and said it was identical to his. Got a motor from Peps for 40 bucks and it was identical in every way. The only thing that ever goes wrong with them are the brushes-when they get low they actually tend to kick sideways and the motor runs intermittently. Saw what a bitch to drill out the rivets, and I just took out the armature and brush end cap and switched them. Getting the armature in was a pain because the magnets want to pull it sideways before it goes all the way in-well you'll see that. If the commutator looks clean just change the brushes. I can't find the proper brush material anywhere. The motor brushes are high current type, they have another material mixed in, or so it seems. There are three bent flanges and the end cap comes off. Remember the brushes are spring loaded so keep something under where you take it apart lest it fall down in the door.
yeah i just swapped motors in about an hour and i did not like drilling and stuff but you have to, to get it done!!
when my drivers side goes bad i will try chaning the brushes if i can find them... sounds alot easiers but lookd hard because the motor is in such a tight spot..
good luck..
