Fire!!

Hey everyone - I have a friend who's car just burnt up. It was a 89 Cavalier Z24. What happened was the wiring in her center console caught on fire. Since the interiors on them are similar to ours, has anyone ever heard of this happening to a Camaro? I was just wondering, and I don't wanna be driving down the road and have my car burst into flames.

She didn't do anything to the wiring. Her parents bought it brand new and she bought it from them 6 years ago. The wiring was never messed with. Must have just been a fluke.

I highly suggest getting in touch with Chevrolet and have them talk to your insurance company. If you're absolutely sure that noone messed with the wiring, Chevy could end up paying for the car for you.

What normally causes wiring fires is the lack of a fuse (or a fuse of higher amperage). If someone made the mistake of changing one of the fuses in the fuse block to a higher amperage, that can cause an electrical fire. But hopefully that's not the case, and you get on Chevy's a$$ about it. Keep us informed!

funny that you mentioned

alrighty! aha! so it has happened to other chevy cars too! Alright I live in pa and I've gone up to the hazelton and the huge U pull it lot up in some northern place. So far I've seen three third gens that had a car fire that looks like it spread from the center console!! I ain't got a clue! I'm quite curious if anyone has any info on this. it seems like it's quite common to have a car fire spread from the center console. So far I've wired a couple things in to the center console like a couple switches however I'm running alot of things with wire loom and keep a trusty fire extinguisher in my car.... always to be on the safe side.. heck I could always add a sprinkler system..

I've got wires all over the place. They are all fused, even the 4 gauge wire going to the stereo has a circuit breaker! It's always a good idea to have fuses. Just out of curiosity, does your girlfriend smoke? There are 2 ash trays in the center console and I'm not implying anything, just saying that might be a possibility.

She's not my girlfriend, she's my girlfriend's friend. Not that it really matters . . . She does smoke, but not in the car. Ironicly she was always afraid of an ash catching her car on fire (go figure). It's possible she could have put the wong fuse in, I'll have to check it out. But I think to be safe I'm gonna check all the wiring in my car to make sure it doesn't happen to me too. That would really pi$$ me off!

It may not be possible to determine the true cause of the car fire. Fire can easily melt the insulation off wires so that you cannot tell whether the insulation was chaffed or not. And if the fire ran hot enough, it could have melted the metal portion of the fuses so that you cannot tell whether oversized fuses were used or not.

in all fairness
on the driver's side, near where the feet go, on the left, there's a light that comes on (of course when the doors open, blah)

that light is practically touching the carpet

i'm afraid of that sucker.. i can feel behind the light, and the carpet is sort of charred there, only where the light was touching it. I feel that will be the death of us all..

It seems like it's in a normal spot, i suppose i don't know if somebody tampered with it, to get it closer to the carpet, though.

Eh.

I got one for ya, just happen to hook up a TPS backwards and drive the car so RICH that the cat burns a patch the size of your foot!!! Now THAT was bad, the light shouldn't be touching carpet, fix it if it is.
