Removing Gauge Cluster

In my 83z I am putting in a 150 mph gauge instead of a 85 mph gauge but I am replacing the whole cluster (the white part with all gagues) how do i get the white part out? I pulled all the front screws and it won't budge. I even pulled the gauges out. What am I missing? Also will my speedo show the right speed sicne it is such a drastic change?

did you first pull the black cover? that's like 7 or so torx screws. then you disconnect the speedo cable from the back.....it's held on by a little clip...push up on the clip and pull out the speedo. Then remove the 2 shiny chrome nuts that are down by where the "engine" and "brake" warning lights would be. Then lower the steering column by the 2 nuts that hold it to the firewall mount. Then when it's dropped....is ONLY when the cluster comes out.

A haynes manual will show you step by step as well if you have $15. Also there is NOTHING to change going from 85 to a 145 speedo. or 150 if you want to call it that.

Steve
PS....i have some pics of this kinda stuff on the chicago board under "my winter project" or something like that.

Ive pulled out many IROC clusters without having to drop the column. May be best ro remove the dashpad to keep from gouging it, but you DONT have to drop the column. Its only 2 bolts anyways, but I didnt have to.

well removing the dashpad is what 9 bolts? i'd rather drop the column a little and just tighten up those nuts again. But I've never been able to remove a cluster without dropping it a little....how did you twist/turn it to pull it out??? It seems that having the column on an angle would not allow it to come out like that.?

Steve

PS i'm not trying to flame so don't take any offense, maybe you have a new way though that i've never tried

First, like I mentioned, I take off the dash pad. After removing all the torx screws holding on the bezel, I drop the lower dash (have to this to get to the column anyways. I basically sit in the seat upside down and reach in and remove the speedo cable. After that you can get the cluster out about 1-1.5 inches, but hit the steering wheel. With the dash pad off, you dont take the chance of ripping it when the cluster rubs against it. I put a towel on the column to keep it form scratching the lense. Then its a little tug and twist, tug and twist and it popped right out. Im used to working in tight areas since I do auto electric. If you are wondering why i didnt just "Drop the column" I was getting the cluster out of a junk yard car and the bolts were rounded and stripped. I personally dont own an IROC, I have a 92 Z28 soo getting my cluster out takes about 2 min When I go to the JYds I always look for IROC 145s. They resell really well. The ones I have found to be a PITA to remove is the TA when the driver side is all T-boned and smashed in. I removed the entire dash board and cluster from outside the car. Dont ask about the words I used in frustration. But hey, I got it out without a scratch.
