how to test alternator???

easy question....how do i test for a bad alternator?? i have a multimeter. what do i put where, and what should readings are good, ok, bad???? run car when testing?? thanks guys

Engine: enough to break stuff
Transmission: manual th400
Axle/Gears: 4.10
with the engine not running put your meter on the battery terminals(pos. to pos. and neg to neg), look for aprox. 10.5 to 12.5V. start the engine if the volage ends up at 13.5 or better your alt. is working properly if it goes back to where it was or less the alt is not working.

you could take it to the local autozone and they will test it for free.
