Grrrrrrrrr Headlight motors
Grrrrrrrrr Headlight motors
I'm sure this has probably been addressed before, but let me throw it out again. With my "new" project Firebird, I started taking apart the headlight motors (neither one worked). I went in through the gear, and the drive dampers were shot. I mean powder shot. Anywho, I was looking at it, and I don't see what is even driving the gear. I think that someone came in and stripped the shaft (?) out of it. All there is on the front is two small metal pieces on small metal wires, and one has some springs sitting in it, but no manual crank-up, no shaft, no nothing... Have I been schnookered on this? I have some info to replace the drive dampers, but what about all of this? I am definately not going to pay 200 a piece for new motors....

Jk,
don't spend more than $2 to repair your headlight motors. I repaired mine by following Steve's instructions.....

I manufacture the repair kit to fix the 1987-92 Firebird headlights. It is under the Body & Interior category on my web site. I am not a fan of using ball bearings as described in those instructions for a couple of reasons. The ball bearings will eventually distort the inside of the nylon gear due to the decreased contact surface (hence higher load on a smaller area of the gear) compared to the bushings. Also the Delrin bushings have been specificaly machined to fit the cavity of the nylon gear and have a better lubricity them. Once the nylon gear is distorted, you'll have greater slop in the mechanism, leading to an increased chance of it binding and further damaging the gear. There is no OEM replacemen for the gear. There is an aftermarket one of machined bronze available though (and it ain't cheap).
Here is the instuction sheet I include with my kits.
