not starting
i have an 89 RS 305 and it has happened twice now where my car wont start. i put the key in and everything happens as it should except its like i dont have any power going to my starter no click like its bad or anything, however i have power everywhere else. the starter is like 6 months old, as is the battery. the people i have talked to have said my neutral safety switch may be going bad or it could be the chip in my key. has anybody ran into this problem before? anybody know how to test to find out what it could be? where can i find this so called neutral safety switch?

First is to eliminate the VATS as a possibility. Normally the security light will come on for about 2 seconds and go off simply by turning the key to the ON position even if you don't crank it. That will tell you the anti-theft system is OK. A VATS malfunction will usually trigger a trouble code if the system is the culprit. There is a crank control relay inside the driver side kick panel. Otherwise normal no crank troubleshooting applies. Sometimes whapping the starter with a small hammer or other heavy tool may reveal a bad starter. Neutral safety is in the console next to the shifter and can be accessed by removing the trim plate. A common problem is the contacts in the ign switch that read the resistor in the key go bad as far as the VATS is concerned.

well i smacked the starter with a hammer when it wouldnt start and it didnt make any difference. but i will check on the ign contacts as soon as i get the chance. and at the same time ill prolly take the trim off and check on the safety switch. and if i can pick one up at a local parts store and not have to order it through the dealer, and its relatively cheap, i might just replace it just to be sure. thanks for the help
