Gauge Cluster
Gauge Cluster
Howdy folks, I've got a question. Has anyone ever had this problem and if so, what'd ya do about it. When I turn my lights on, they work fine for about the first five minutes after being on. After that for some strange reason, the Tach, Voltmeter, and Oil Pressure Gauges all go "Crazy" so to speak. They all quit working and the right side turn signal indicator lights up constant. This is totally new to me and I have my thoughts on what it may be but any experience would be helpful. I changed the rheostat since when I attempt to brighten or dim the lights they go funky again, after whatever happens starts, if I turn the dashlight brightness all the way down they start working again, but I just can't see them. I haven't pulled the gauge cluster out and checked out the printed circuit or anything yet, but I did change the headlight dimmer/rheostat switch. My old one had a 'dead' spot in it and wouldn't turn the cab light on without some tweaking. Any experience or thoughts would be helpful, thanks now.
I'm having the exact same problem with my '85 Z28. There's a similar post about an '89 where someone suggest cleaning/checking the printed circuit behind the cluster. My problem just started so I haven't had time to check it out....
Maybe I should have done a search first.... Found one from sept. 2000 that seems to confirm the printed circuit problem. check this one out: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ight=tach+dies
It is definitly the printed circuit board. We had a big discusion on this, search

I had this same problem, and it drove me nuts untill we figured it out.
This post has suggestions on how to fix it, or the way I did it, get a cluster from a junk yard, and replace it.

Thanks for the responses guys. Only problem is that here in MT there aren't too many junkyards with camaro's in them let alone with this type dash. A lot of what was sold up here looks more like sport coupes and such. I was wondering if it was the printed circuit if the fix would be a simple as using one of those defroster repair kits for the defroster grids in the back windows. If not I've got some techie type friends at the college that could likely help me out. Thanks again folks, Later; Gary
The circuit board is the problem.
I'm not positive on this but what you should be able to do
is if you can find a similar gauge cluster, you can just use the white plastic housing and the printed board. Then just swap your original gauges into the new housing.
There also some repair tips in the article I told you to search for.
They may also help you out.
