Accel 300+ Igntion
Accel 300+ Igntion
Hey, I want to soon upgrade my ignition. Car is an '89 IROC-Z 350 TPI. Currently, all the igniton components are stock. The only mods to the car's engine is new cat. converter, muffler, air foil and K&Ns. I was thinking about just adding MSD cap/rotor/and coil (I didn't think the $200 msd box is worth it on a very mild engine.) But then I just noticed the Accel 300+ ignition on Summit for $229. It includes the box (digital) and coil. This sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I've heard some people in the past put down Accel but anybody else with other opinions? If I went with the Accel 300+ then I would also use accel cap/rotor and MAYBE accel wires, although I am VERY happy with my Delco wires that I have now (only 7mm but I'm sure I can upgrade to 8mm- does AC make 8mm? Part #?) I just don't like mixing brands up so I want to either go all MSD or all Accel. So can you guys tell me if I should just stick to msd cap/rotor/coil or shoud I go all out with Accel 300+/cap/rotor? Opinions on Accel? Thanks! -89IRO

I went through the same deliberations in the past and tried some accel products. IMO the Accel 8.0 and 8.8 wires are garbage, especially the 8.0 mm wires. On a positive note the 8.8's held up better for me and they had good radio suprression qualities but at the cost of very high resistance (not good!). 300+ wires are very well made and offer reasonably good radio supression.
My current setup is simple and has worked well for a couple of years so far and consists of all MSD products. 6A box, blaster coil (external), cap, rotor and super conductor wires (cut to fit). The only small complaint that I would have is that the ignition wires do not supress radio interference as good as my old 8.8's did, BUT they have MUCH less resistance = more power, so who cares.
My opinion; steer away from Accel and go with **MSD or ***Jacobs, companies that truly make very high quality products.

Thanks, when you say the super conductor wires "cut to fit" do you mean custom fit wires (pre-made) or universal wires (you have to put together)? Whichever you meant, can you give me the part number on them? I'm assuming you have the same size engine as me ('89 IROC-Z 350 TPI.) Also, if you happen to know the part # on the heli-core wires (a little cheaper) can you let me know? I'm not lazy here, it's just that I don't know what to look for- some say universal is better so you don't get wires that are too short and others say custom are just fine. I need 8mm (8.5 is ok for super conductor) and both ends 90 degrees. I've also heard good brands are moroso and Taylor. -89IRO

6A or 6 AL
I like the 6a box and have installed it on a variety of cars with success. Just make sure when choosing a mounting location to keep in mind that you do not want to exposure the box to too much heat and/or direct moisture.
It is nice to have the rev limiter option but not totally required for a street car, as you say. If you go with the 6AL, keep spare "pills" on you at all times. If (when) they die your car will not start.

MSD Wires
I meant universal wires that you have to put together. I got the 8.5mm super conductors. All 90 deg boots. Don't have the PN handy, I'll look later tonight.
My engine is not a TPI, its carbed. I believe MSD offers a direct fit wire set for your motor (PN?) but I always prefer to fit wires myself for any V8 car. Check out Summit for the TPI wire PN.
I only speak from my past experiences with other brands of wires (Accel and Taylor) and I prefer by far the MSD products overall.
