car won't run with fans!!

Hey guyz, i gotta few problems with my buddies car and we're stumped!!

First off he has a 1972 355ci block, fully build with forged internals, Edelbrock intake, slp runners, 58mm TB, Edelbrock headers, etc.. Fastchip tuning.. Manual Fan switch..

We just finished the 355 build up, installed it all, all done, however we can start it up fine, it runs, idels fine, when the temp gets up to about 170-175ish we kick on the fans and it starts stumbling and running rough like its missing.. Also, if we turn on the Lights it does the same thing, these seem to be the only things that cause it so far.. His cars pretty gutted out, no A/C, no Heat, no AIR, etc.. Whats Wrong!! Any ideas??

Mike

Looks as if any heavy electric load is either pulling the ground of the chassis or engine high (towards 12V) or the injector supply (hot) low.

I would go through and ensure that you have a solid ground connection between the engine block and the body. Check your fusible links and the positive connection at the starter where all the heavy guage positive leads meet.

I think the problem has to do with the hot lead supplying the injectors or the ground of the engine block not being good enough.

Check enough of these connections and you should fix it, that's my two cents.

check your alternator, i was having the same problem with my stereo. when turned on engine rpm would be jumpin a little. i put a 4g braided ground strap to the negative battery termainal to the chassis. an it got better i bought 5 five more from summit and put them in random locations that i tought would be good, since the i have put in more stereo and it hasn't came back. but considering you are having a problem with just your lights, check the wiring to alternator and distubutor also check the battery it migt be a matince free battery, you shouldn't have a mantince free batery in these cars. (what i hear)

Don't know what he is referring to with the battery. A charged battery is all you need, however I suspect either the alt is not wired in correctly or it is simply not charging. Get a voltmeter and measure across the battery terminals. At rest, engine off if it's charged it should be approx 12.6 volts, engine running if it is charging somewhere bet 13.5-14.5 volts. Sound like the bat is low, and it's not charging at all. If when running it drop below it's resting voltage which I think it will troubleshoot the charging system.

when i 1st brought the car to a shop to have them figure what its worth. they told me what was wrong with it. they said that i should have a drycell battery, and not a matince free battery. i dunno the differnce but this what they told me. they are "Camaro Connections" on long island NY, and all they deal with is 3rd gen camaros along with a few 4th.
