While you're down there checking wires, make sure the teeth on the driven gear are engaged with the drive gear and that they haven't eaten each other up.

the speedo sensor itself has one gear that slides on the shaft- is there another gear that i need?? i thought it just 'plugs' into the output shaft and is driven by that- is there some other gear that i need to pull out of the auto tranny?

There's a plastic ring-shaped gear that slides over the output shaft and is retained with a small metal clip. The drive gear.

The driven gear is a mushroom-shaped gear attached to the VSS unit. Also plastic.
