the speedo sensor itself has one gear that slides on the shaft- is there another gear that i need?? i thought it just 'plugs' into the output shaft and is driven by that- is there some other gear that i need to pull out of the auto tranny?

There's a plastic ring-shaped gear that slides over the output shaft and is retained with a small metal clip. The drive gear.
The driven gear is a mushroom-shaped gear attached to the VSS unit. Also plastic.
