how to fix IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER ....HELP PLEASE

Help... My lock cylinder wont work. The steering wheel snaps if you turn it hard enough and you can put the car in gear ...auto of course....is this just the lock cylinder or could it be something else. Here is what happened ....I was pissed slammed the car in park was turning the wheel and tried to pull the key out....at first I couldnt pull the key out then I did and I couldnt turn the ignition anymore....Like I said though with or without the key the steering wheel will snap around as you turn it....clicking noise....and you can change gears......ANY SUGGESTIONS.......HELP PLEASE......88 FORMULA AUTO 305TPI

You shouldn't take out frusterations on your car. (j/k)
The only situation I have close to yours is, I pulled my car out of park (not by force either) and it ended up destroying the ignition switch on the column (not the cylinder you put the key in). The shifter has a cable tied into it to lock out the shifter when the key is not in the 'run' position. If somehow you yank the shifter into gear while the key is in the wrong position, the 'shifter lock' cable will destroy the switch rendering it worthless. When I broke mine, I had to use vise-grips to start the car and then pull the ECM fuse and disconnect the battery to turn it off.
Just my scenerio, my not be your case....

Ignition switch is roughly $15 at autozone btw.

I found that mine wouldn't let the key come out and it turns out that the shifter button was stuck down.

Drop the steering column and see if you snapped any of the rods that go between the ignition cylinder and the ignition switch. It's all of two bolts on the underside of the column, once you get the panels off. Have a look with a flashlight.

If everything's fine in there, it's probably the cylinder or the switch. The switch is more of a pain in the *** cause it sits on top the column, but swapping lock cylinders is no big deal with the right tools. You need a steering wheel puller and one of those U-shaped screw-in vices to get the lock plate off. You have to get to ONE annoying screw that holds the lock cylinder in, which is behind the turn signal switch and buzzer switch. These come out with three phillips head screws, just take notes on how the turn signal arm is oriented on it so it's easy to put back on. You may have to put the left or right blinker "on" to get all three screws. After that, it's an allen screw holding the cylinder in. Unscrew it and the cylinder slides right out. You can pop another one in from another car (with the key of course) or get a universal one that will fit. Reassemble everything and you're good to go.

In retrospect, I was extremely lucky to have spare parts from my other car and a friend with the right tools. If you don't have either of these options, you're going to have to find the right parts and you can probably rent the tools. Hopefully someone in your area is on these boards and is willing to help out. The Chilton's manual came in handy for this problem, also. Good luck!
