possible blown fusible link?? not sure though could use some opinions

Okay i was making a trip to a city about 30miles away yesterday and driving down the highway just cruising at around 65mph in my trans am and the radio and everything shut off and the car will not start or anything it wont even crank over....we tried to bypass the fusible link near the battery and it still wouldnt crank over buy my headlights would turn on however, they wouldnt go up they stayed down..

i could use some help on this one i'm speechless ( haha )
(its kinda weird when you're driving down the highway and all of a sudden everything turns off)

Also i popped the hood and my antifreeze was boiling what could that be??? my car was running around 215 to 220

by the way its a 1984 trans am l69 112,000 miles

Thanks a lot!!!!!
Mitch

any price estimates on how much itll cost to fix???

Does it click at all when you try and start it? It could be the FL before the starter. Not sure how much it costs to do it yourself, its gotta be pretty cheap though, cause i took mine to a shop and it was still pretty cheap.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
There should be two fusible links off the starter terminal; one runs everything that operates when the key is in the 'on', 'start', or 'acc' position such as the starter motor, heater fan, radio, turn signals, dash gauges and back-up lights....the other one powers everything that will run without the key being on, such as headlights, parklights, brakelights, horn, domelight, etc.
If everything on one or the other doesn't work, the fusible link should be the culprit. If some of each do work, then the links are fine.
Since you mentioned the starter doesn't crank and the radio died, that would be my guess (although I can't explain the headlight motors not operating??)

Pete

Its possible to smoke all your fusible links at the same time. Trust me.
Also, if you take it to a shop, cost for parts is going to be almost nothing, so all you should pay for is an hour or two of labor.

This sounds like a problem I have now but hard to diagnose. First what does not work 1. Headlights, interior lights, gauge lights, door locks, trunk motor. What does work 2. heater, turn signals, hazards, starts fine. Does this sound like one of those fusible links? Thanks.
