lights out after trying to start
lights out after trying to start
Please give me some ideas here. I looked under fusable links and VATS in the board archives, but they don't sound like my problem. Driving home one night, my lights, engine, and dash were blinking (security and airbag lights, too), but for the most part staying on. I pulled over to check my battery connections, turned off the vehicle, checked the wires (all good), got back in, tried to start it and a loud "thunk" was heard like someone threw a circuit breaker - no cranking, no fuel pump, no lights, no interior or IP lights, nothing. It will stay dead like this for a while. The lights reset later (turning key to accessories allows the lights on the dash to come up, and interior light works again), at least a minute or so after every attempted start, but trying to start it again gives the same problem.
My car is a 91 Z, 305 manual. It has an aftermarket alarm, which I unwired, and even jumpered a relay, and still the same thing. I had a friend hook up jumper cables, and still the same thing. We checked continuity from the battery to the engine, engine to chassis, and chassis to battery - all good. All fuses seem OK. I haven't tried the VATS trick yet.
Any ideas? Thanks.
