trunk pulldown

I have a 91 Z 28 convertible with the pull down hatch. I can't latch my trunk, the latch makes the noise but doesn't pull down. I removed the whole assembly and seen the plastic piece that covers the little motor was broken almost in two. Could that be my problem? I don't really want to, but I have three parts cars, and two of them have manual latches. Do you think it would be easier to make it manual. Thanks for any help guys.

I've already tried that but the regular hatch has a much smaller bolt pattern than the pull down hatch release. Sounds to me that the gears are striped(happens if you slam down the hatch). You might be able to find one at a junk yard(I lucked out and found one) but check out http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...l?v=1&pid=1391 thats a housing and motor, you can also find them on www.ebay.com just search for hatch pull down and you should be able to pick up the whole deal for about 30 bucks.

Top-down solutions has all the stuff to totally rebuild the pull down unit. They also have special reinforced plastic housings for the motor. The parts should also be available from a Chevy dealership. Top-down solutions also has very good instructions for how to remove and rebuild your pull-down hatch unit. They also are very helpful if you email them. The process is pretty simple and after doing my buddy's car it worked like a charm.
