can i use a coil-in-cap distributor instead of the remote coil dist. in my 92 RS?
Just wondering because I have to replace my distributor soon and I have a brand new Pertronix Flamethrower that's coil-in-cap. If so, how do I go about installing it? Is there going to be some kind of adapter that I need? Any help would be appreciated, I know squat about distributors/ignitions/electronics.

I was wondering the same thing in a previous post. I did some research and think it would work. After all the 90-91 1227727 ecm used on corvettes still used the in cap hei distributor. The 1227727 and 1227730 function identically one is just weatherproofed. The only thing I was able to tell is the connectors are wired differently. Make sure you have the 7 pin ignition module and a electronic advance type distrbutor as thats how the spark curve is controlled. Assuming thats what you meant.

There Is A Difference??!!
I was reading this post and I had to run outside and go look at my two F-bodies.......
I have a 1983 Trans Am with 305 4bbl and a 1992 Camaro RS convertible with 305 TBI. The T/A has the Hypertech Coil (in cap), and i was thinking about swapping them around. So after reading the post I had to go and look and see that there was indeed a difference between the distributors of these two cars. Guess I ought to open my eyes more often.
So, is there a high performance coil after market replacement for the ignition coil on my '92 RS?
Thanks for the awakening!!

just finished re-pinning my mass air flow harness to run run with a speed density harness, unplug the 4 terminal est plug from the distributor, get a harness from the external coil distributor and you will see the wire colors from the external coil distributor match whats in that 4 termial plug just splice and your ready to go

Just wanted to add that there are differences between internal HEI electronically advanced distributors. You can use just about any electronically advanced distributor as long as you have the correct ignition module per the application since they are different to engine size unless you get an aftermarket one which will do many engine types. Remember also that vacuum advanced and mechanically advanced distributors wont work as they use a 4 pin ignition module and the computer wont be able to control the advance and spark curve. I believe you can buy aftermarket remote coils as well as ingnition modules from summitracing etc.
