Dears,

Once every hour of driving, I am loosing my speedometer, the needle just goes to zero and this lasts for a couple of seconds or a couple of minutes...during that period, the car is driving erratically and sometimes the engine even stall , but not always ( Most of the time I can continue to drive and go home with the car "behaving sluggish", so there is gas and sparks...

There seems to be no error code stored in the ECM (just code 12 of course)...I just put a new ECM in, but the problem is still there....since the problem is intermittent and disappears, it is very hard to diagnose and no mechanic can help me (I am living in Belgium, those cars are very seldom)....

My car is a Firebird from 1990 V6 3.1 automatic and with cruise control, and ADS SuperChip....I am getting desperate to find the source of the problem....any idea to solve this ? Did somebody experience the same and found a solution ??

Many thanks for your help.

John

some additional remarks....
...dears,

I forgot to mention that my odometer and trip odometer don't move neither when I am loosing my speedometer....I believe that the speedometer is electronic on Firebirds with Cruise control, right ???

Also a couple of years ago I had the exact same trouble, the mechanic replaced the ECM but obuiously did also some other things since I just replace the ECM and it doesn't change anything...this mechanic was really a crook !

its your VSS. they are about $52 new from autozone..

to change it, jack up the car from the REAR. that way the tranny fluid is forward... you may still get some on you, but it helps. if you are willing to do this, jack it up only from the drivers side rear.. that way, the fluid is to the pass side and forward.

the VSS is on the drivers side of the tailshaft.
unplug the weatherpack connector from it first.
using a 10mm socket or wrench, take out the bolt holding it in.
pull it straight out.

there should be a plastic gear on the end. it pulls straight off. take it off and slide it on the new VSS.

side the new VSS in there. its easiest if you try to line up the bolt tab with the bolt hole as you push it in.

reinstall the bolt and snug it down.. put the connector back on, and you're done...

with the car on level ground again, look for leaks... take it for a drive and enjoy your working speedo.
