Temp Gauge is Reading 30 degrees hot

My temp gauge is reading about 20-30 degrees hotter then the engine is really at. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if so, what will fix this dilemma? Is it the temp sender on the head or is it the actual gauge that could be faulty? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks.
