what would make this wire melt?

ok, i have a 12awg wire that goes from my starter to a 30amp circuit breaker. the circuit breaker is for the manual fan switch as well as the high beams for my car. the total watts for the aftermarket headlights is 460watts, its bright. a while ago i noticed that the wire didnt look so healthy, looked like it got hot. i thought that was becuase the wires on the circuit breaker were loose. i tightend it up and thought it fixed it. i had to replace my alternator today and when i fired up the car the alternator was hot as hell and working hard. i was like wtf, the batteries arnt that low. and i seen this smoke coming from under the hood and i thought i cooked this alternator already. but it was the circuit breaker. think a shotty circuit breaker could cause this? also, with the high beams on, the circuit breaker will trip sometimes, should i put the high beams and fan on a 40amp circuit breaker?

you might want to look into runing the fan off of a relay and switch.

to much current draw with resistance in the wire causes the wire to get hot. meaning you would either need better wires or a better way of handling the current like a relay for the switch.

the fan is ran by a relay switch, negative throw. would a 40amp circuit breaker be too much?
