starting problems!!

the problem is sometimes when i go to start the car the starter just clicks.i have to turn the key like ten times before it will crank. i put in a new starter less than a year ago and i get this. then i brought the starter back to napa and they gave me another and i still have the problem. everyonce in a while tho. it will start right up. also now the key cylinoid seems like it locks and i have to fight to get the key out. the key problem just started too.
any help is great.
thanks

sounds like your ignition switch is loose at the steering column. it is mounted at lower portion of column on the top, check your hi/low headlight beam switch ,is it difficult to use, also?these two switches are mounted together and they have elongated holes that allow for adjustment.the bolts have a bad habit of backing off and causing the symptoms you describe. hope this helps, good luck!

Sounds like two problems, ignition switch and starter problems. From what you say, when you try to start, all you get is clicking from your solenoid. If your battery is good, the problem is between your battery and the starter. The problem could be as simple as a dirty battery terminal. Remove the negative and positive terminals, clean them real good, replace with some grease. It the problem is still there, it may be a bad battery cable, from the battery to the starter. It could also be a bad electrical connection at the starter. A rare possibility could be the starter bendix gear jamming on the flywheel. To test that, when the starter just clicks, put a socket on the damper bolt and try to manually rotate the engine. If you start turning and you hear a noise at the starter, thats the problem. May need shims.

I have that very same problem with my GTA. Next time it just clicks turn the motor by hand with a ratchet and socket on the alt and then try that, Every once in a while I have to do that, my flywheel is all screwed up and i am just waiting for some ambition to change it.
