'83 TA Speedo malfunction, help needed!

Hi all,

Ok, I'm in the process of restoring an '83 TA that I recently acquired. While driving it home, I saw that the speedo wasn't working. Later, when I checked the codes, it reported that there is a circuit fault in the vehicle speed sensor (Code 24).

"Ok," I thought to myself, "the speedometer cable probably isn't hooked up, or the VSS is shot." I called a friend who works at a Pontiac dealership to ask for a price on a new VSS. He told me that the 700R4 in an '83 TA shouldn't use one.

Not knowing quite how to approach this problem, I tore apart the dash, to look at the back of the speedo, to see if the cable was hooked up. To my surprise, while the old speedo cable is sticking up there, I have an all electric cluster. Apparently someone swapped out the old mechanical cluster for the electric style. Everything else on the cluster works, including tach, oil pressure, fuel gauge, battery, etc.

So now I need the help. How in the heck do I find out what's causing the speedo to not work? If my understanding is correct, a VSS has been installed on my transmission.

If this is correct, I can check to see if some wires are hooked up to the VSS, right? Where do I find the VSS, and can I test it? If I need a new one, can I get one from GM, and what's the part number? HELP ME!!!

Any clues anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
