Replacing Temperature gauge

I have a 1986 Firebird..I have a temp gauge which is not acturately reading right..two questions: 1) does the gauge have a effect on when the fan operates? and 2) whats the proper way of removing old gauge to install new gauge, without goofing everything up?

There are two in question. The dash gauge 'sensor' itself is located on of the sides of the cylinder heads (mine was originally on the passenger side, but is now on the drivers side)..... which has nothing to do with the electric fan. When removing this sensor, remember to drain you're coolant first.

The other coolant temperature sensor is actually a 'switch' that activates the electric fan.... if you have a Computer Controlled Carburetor, it will be located on top of the water-neck housing over the thermostat.

If you have TPI, it's located on the front of the intake manifold....
